Camp

Only an hour and a half from Tucson and two hours from Phoenix, the Triangle Y Ranch Camp is located in the northern foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. At a 5000 foot elevation, the camp’s 400 acres provide beautiful scenery and ample facilities. Dance on our custom-made, resilient wood floor, and enjoy the amazing view of the San Pedro River valley from the dining hall. Hike and explore the surrounding Coronado National Forest in the Arizona sunshine.

Check-in opens at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Please plan to arrive before dark (5:30pm) to get settled in your cabin or camping spot.  Camp begins with supper, followed by a dance. We start Saturday with a hearty breakfast, then prepare for a full day of workshops for dancers, singers, and musicians. Saturday night’s gala dance will be followed by late night jamming. Sunday morning features more music and dance workshops, and the weekend concludes with a dance after lunch on Sunday. Camp closes at 3:00 p.m.

Rustic cabins each house up to twelve campers in bunks and share nearby rest rooms and shower houses. Cabins are designated family, mixed-gender, or single gender, and will be available on a first-come basis at camp.   There is plenty of space for tent camping and RV parking.   You can also arrange your own off-site accommodations in nearby Oracle or Catalina and receive a discount on your registration fee. If you have further questions about accommodations, send a message through the contact form below.

Six hearty meals (Friday supper through Sunday lunch) plus delightful snacks will be provided. There are both omnivore and vegetarian options. Campers with more specific dietary needs should plan to provide their own food.

Making It Happen

Other than the musicians and callers, Dance in the Desert is entirely run by volunteers. Each camper is asked to do one chore at camp. Let us know in advance if you have any special needs or talents.

A limited number of Work Trade positions are available ($60 off for approximately 3 hours of work) for those needing financial assistance. Please note on the registration form if you wish to request the work trade option.

About the Bands

The Faux Paws

The Faux Paws

The Faux Paws bring a unique blend of trad, jazz, old time, funk, and blues and will take you on an emotionally driven dance journey!

The Faux Paws are the natural evolution of Noah VanNorstrand’s Great Bear Trio, featuring Owen Morrison (Elixir) on guitar and Chris Miller on saxophone and banjo. ”Dynamic and dramatic, their driving rhythm, playful themes, & nuanced execution bring the dancing to great heights! Their music propels everybody along a delightful journey, so satisfying to witness!” – George Marshall
While the band has been primarily focusing on playing major bluegrass festivals and recording their original music with brother Andrew VanNorstrand, they are playing a rare number of dance weekends with Owen to keep the legacy alive!

About the Callers

Lisa Greenleaf

Steve Zakon-Anderson

When Steve walked into his first contra dance in1980, little did he know how it would change his life. He began calling three years after that, and has now danced, called, taught and organized contra dances for over 40 years, performing and teaching at dance events and camps all over this country, and in a few others.   Steve relishes the caller’s role facilitating the joyful connection between the music on the stage and the dancers on the floor. He is appreciated by dancers for his skill at programming the right dances for the hall, for his clear and efficient teaching and prompting, and for his sense of humor; he is appreciated by bands for his considerate weaving of his calling within the music.  Steve has also composed many contemporary contras widely in use today.

Susan Petrick

Koren Wake

Koren Wake has been dancing, loving, and obsessing about contra since she was a child. Originally from New England, she spent decades analyzing the art and flow of contra and developing a deep understanding of the dance before she finally picked up a microphone in Seattle, where she is now based. She has already shared stages with some of the hottest bands in the Pacific Northwest, and has quickly proven that’s exactly where she belongs. She loves nothing more than to help dancers discover the patterns and connections of well-crafted choreography. Koren’s primary goal as a caller is to combine exquisite dance selection with clear and accessible teaching in order to bring dancers of all skill levels together on the floor.
